Andrew

Your modem
   Class 0703: 8086:266d Modem: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW
      Primary PCI_id  8086:266d
    Subsystem PCI_id  1179:0001
    Softmodem codec or chipset from diagnostics: SIL2f
                               from Archives: SIL27, an LSI/AgereSystems type
has a different chipset than Anita.
So the problems need not be comparable.

Both SIL2f and SIL27 should be activated by your command line
$  sudo slmodemd -c CANADA --alsa modem:1
Though the SIL2f variant is much rarer

There are certainly others on this List successfully using the
slmodemd + the snd-intel8x0m ALSA driver.

Though I expect it is not the problem, best send us you wvdial.conf ,
but XXXX your password.

Please verify that your phone line has a dialtone when an ordinary
phone is attached to it.

Though mostly necessary only in Italy, try the effect of adding an X3
to the Init2 line:
Init2  =  ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 X3 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

Also please do the setup with:
$  sudo slmodemd -c CANADA   --debug=2   --log   --alsa  modem:1
after the following
$ wvdial
failure, send us the output log file.

I'm not sure exactly what to do because I seem to have found different walkthroughs between the ubuntu help site and the text files included in /modem from scanModem. Here's what I've been doing based on what I understand:

My modem has been replaced since initially buying the laptop and so that might be the reason although I do not fully understand this stuff. Also, do I need to install linux-lib-dev and libc6-dev or should ubuntu 7.10 already have this.
