Hi, I think I'm having a similar problem to Anita Kuno. I've spend most of yesterday trying to get dial up to work and a couple hours today and so I finally seek help. I'm not sure exactly what to do because I seem to have found different walkthroughs between the ubuntu help site and the text files included in /modem from scanModem. Here's what I've been doing based on what I understand: (you should know that I am running of a live CD and so everything is reset, etc.) I unpack SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz, follow the instructions given in its textfiles al the way to sudo slmodemd -c CANADA --alsa modem:1 which creates /dev/ttySL0 I then open another command line window(can't think of the proper name at the moment), then I follow the instructions I found on the ubuntu help site. I use: $ sudo wvdialconf, which makes the wvdial.conf file. Then I enter $ sudo nano /etc/wvdial.conf, to modify the file by adding the phone number, username and password. I also add Carrier Check = no . Then I enter $ sudo wvdial and I get a similar response to John: WvDial Modem: ATDT6133501638 > WvDial Modem: NO CARRIER > WvDial: No Carrier! Trying again. I also never hear a dial tone or any dialing coming from my computer although I don't know if I'm supposed to. I really hope that some one can help me because this is becoming discouraging. Thanks in advance, Andrew P.S. Here's some extra information that may be useful. Somewhere in ModemData.txt, it says that the archived modem doesn not agree with the detected one. My modem has been replaced since initially buying the laptop and so that might be the reason although I do not fully understand this stuff. Also, do I need to install linux-lib-dev and libc6-dev or should ubuntu 7.10 already have this.
