A slmodemd of version 2.9.11 is likely necessary, while the version in
the sl-modem-source package you are likely using is 2.9.9e. Check
with:
$ slmodemd --version
>From http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ get the
SLMODEMD.gcc4.1.tar.gz Therein is a 2.9.11 version slmodemd,
kernel_version independent. Also read the wvdial.txt therein. For
modems using /dev/pts/N portsm the wvdial.conf needs a line:
Carrier Check = no
as Linux /dev/pts/N ports have not yet been equipped with sound sensitivity.

Hi,
I'm always amazed by the speed of answer on these lists. Thanks.
I am in fact using the latest slmodem on the site aka
slmodem-2.9.11-20080324.tar.gz, and slmodemd --version gives me 2.9.11.
But I have also just discovered that it is not at all the fault of slmodem.
It is the usb connection.
If the modem is plugged directly to the USB ports of my computer it works.
If it is connected by means of a hub, then it stops working. Funny. All
my other peripherals (mouse, scanner, printer) work just nice through
that hub.
I believe that the problem may lay in the way in which the linux kernel
sees the device.
If it is directly connected, then it is seen as a usb device connected
through an UHCI port (i.e. the UHCI companion to the USB 2 port on my
laptop).
If it is connected through the hub, then it appears a usb device
connected through an EHCI port (likely due to a translator in the hub).
