Peter,

Please send to the List as I'm rarely on line this week.
Please work directly with wvdial not its gnome-ppp front end.
Do
$ sudo wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
With
$ sudo gedit  /etc/wvdial.conf
add a line
Carrier Check  =  no

error: period size 48 is not supported by playback (64).
error: period size 48 is not supported by playback (64).
is strange as it should have been fixed in that SLMODEM package.
