Edward,

: INCORRECT. Admittedly sometimes has a slow wakeup.
Marv,
No problem reading Edward's ModemData.txt.
Appended inline below.

Hi
I've downloaded scanmodem from the site you suggested and this is the
ModemData.txt file attached.
This http://xmodem.org/modems/usblist.html page don't seem to exist.
Please give me the exact name of the slmodem drivers as there are quite a
number.
Thank you.
Edward

Edward,
Your modem is supported under Linux by the USB version of the SmartLink
slmodem/slamr driver, as can be seen for the same modem sold by Aztec in
Rob Clark's tables at http://xmodem.org/modems/usblist.html
When you find some waiting ModemData.txt, scrap it, it is obsolete.
Read http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/#scanModem to download and execute
the last version (less than two weeks old) of scanModem, a program which
writes ModemData.txt
ModemData.txt says which kernel you have and which driver file to use.
Send us ModemData.txt if you need further help.

Hi
I've now recently installed Ubuntu 7.10. I've been running Microsoft for
approx 24 years, I feel I had enough of it. I like the Linux style and
wants
to pursue in that direction. I am a newy to Linux..
I have a problem installing my modem.
I'm on a dial-up connection and are using a external modem.
MODEM type = External USB
MAKE = Sahara 56K USB RP (1)
Product name = S9100-W
Model no. = UM9100-W
I am also having difficult to get the printer to work.
PRINTER Make = Lexmark X2350
Machine Type-model = 4420-001
USB connection
I've visit the HOWTO sites, changed from PCI to the external hoping it
will
work, nothing going.
I'm still unfimiliar with the Linux terminology which make things a bit
difficult to understand.
Please be so kind and show me the way.
I am just running UBUNTU on my P4 machine, to connect to the NET I must
use
another machine.
In the MODEM folder I found 2 ModemData.txt files, the one differs by the
period after the extension "ModemData.txt." and the contents read "Usb
modem PCI ID not recognized"
Thanking you in anticipatation.

scanModem update of: 2007-12-07
The modem symbolic link is /dev/modem -> ttySL0
There are no blacklisted modem drivers in /etc/modprobe* files
Potentially useful modem drivers now loaded are:
snd_atiixp_modem
snd_via82xx_modem
snd_intel8x0m
The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) packages providing audio
support on your System,
also includes drivers for some modems. High Definition Audio (HDA) cards
can themselves host
a softmodem chipset, with both audio+modem supported by a snd-hda-intel
driver.
The ALSA diagnostics are written during bootup to /proc/asound/ folders.
Modem not detected though HDA card diagnostics, though not excluding
a possible Conexant modem chip impervious to ALSA diagnostics.
Proceeding through alternative possibilties.
Summary card and chipset information is in:

There is candidate modem software.
The base of the UDEV device file system is: /dev/.udev
Versions adequately match for the compiler installed: 4.1.3
and the compiler used in kernel assembly: 4.1.3
Minimal compiling resources appear complete:
make utility - /usr/bin/make
Compiler version 4.1
linuc_headers base folder /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/build
However some compilations and executable functions may need additional
files,
in the FileNames.h (so called kernel "h"eaders) collection installed
in /usr/include/ .
For martian_modem, additional required packages are libc6-dev (and for
Debian/Ubuntu, linux-libc-dev). The also required headers of package
libc6 are commonly installed by default.
Compressed files at: /usr/src/sl-modem.tar.bz2
If a driver compilation fails, with message including some lack of some
FileName.h (stdio.h for example), then
Some additional kernel-header files need installation to /usr/include.
The minimal additional packages are libc6-dev
and any of its dependents, under Ubuntu linux-libc-dev
If an alternate ethernet connection is available,
$ apt-get update
$ apt-get -s install linux-kernel-devel
will install needed pacakage
For Debian/Ubuntu related distributions, run the following command to
display the needed package list:
Otherwise packages have to be found through http://packages.ubuntu.com
Once downloaded and transferred into a Linux partition,
they can be installed alltogether with:
$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Checking pppd properties:
-rwsr-xr-- 1 root dip 269256 2007-10-04 21:57 /usr/sbin/pppd
In case of an "error 17" "serial loopback" problem, see:
http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/archive-sixth/msg02637.html
To enable dialout without Root permission do:
$ su - root (not for Ubuntu)
sudo chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd
or under Ubuntu related Linuxes
sudo chmod a+x /usr/sbin/pppd
Checking settings of: /etc/ppp/options
asyncmap 0
noauth
