Marvin, SUCCESS! wvdial seems to be dialing in. It now gets stopped after the password for my account (NTS-online). NTS gives be back BAD PASSWORD on the two accounts I have, and after several calls their help line does not know what to do for that - yet! I installed a modem in a WinXP machine, and got the same result using Hyperterminal. I have tried the logins at other dial-ins, including Juno, attempting a guest account, and it looks like I get a welcome screen from Juno. Reworking some of your previous suggestions into a script file, I got the results shown below. wvdial dials in, and goes thru connnection to login and password. What does NOT happen is something like a Hyperteminal window. Is that what I should get? Is there another peice of software I should try for that? I cannot find out how to start Gnome-ppp from the command line. I have not yet installed the slamr-2.6.22-14-generic tar you sent me, will do that after I determine I have an account I can get into, unless you think it important. I have the question of how I should unpack it. I tried gunzip, and it unzipped and put the tar in my home holder. I have not tried tar on that yet; I'm still a newbie on all this. Thanks for getting me this far.
