Dear Marvin,

thank you for getting back to me. I've done everything as instructed. The modem was indeed founded as you predicted. When I launch wvdial, I get the following output:

ATDT822539222
NO CARRIER
ERROR
--> No Carrier!  Trying again.
--> Sending: ATDT822539222
--> Waiting for carrier.

This can't be because of the no signal in phone line connected to my notebook, as I send this message by dialouting from Windows on the same notebook, same modem, same provider and phone line.

This block is repeated endlessly (and very quickly - the thing I wouldn't expect from dialup because it needs times to perform each step pf dialout process), until I CTRL+C it, and I must notice that no signs from moded was heard. The terminal tab where slmodemd was left running was full with 'error: cannot setup hw params for playback: Invalid argument' strings. This leads me to conclusion that slmodemd wasn't configured properly, but I would prefer to left decision making to experts like you. Any thoughts on this are much appreciated.

I would like to once again thank you for your support, Marvin.

Andrey,

After

:~$ sudo slmodemd -c RUSSIA --alsa hw:0,6
slmodemd must be left running. Open a new TAB on the console or a new
console and run
$ sudo wvdialconf   /etc/wvdial.conf
which should report finding the modem through /dev/ttySL0

Edit in your personal information with:
$ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
replacing the <xxx> placeholders and removing the leading ; on those lines.
Add a line:
Carrier Check  =  no

After saving, trial a dialout with
$ sudo wdial.

Only close slmodemd after completion of dialout session, with
Ctrl-C
in its own console window.

Dear Marvin,

thank you for sending me instructions and for offering possibility to get
support.

I followed all instructions carefully:

1. Downloaded recommended package.
2. Unpacked it.
3. Changed mode for slmodemd (chmod a+x slmodemd)
4. Copied file to sbin/ directory (sudo cp slmodemd /usr/sbin/)
5. Launched daemon. The output was:

dryu@joybook:~$ sudo slmodemd -c RUSSIA --alsa hw:0,6
SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.11 Aug  6 2007 22:02:27
symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/1' created.
modem `hw:0,6' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/1'
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.

Assuming that modem configuration is finished, I tried to setup dialup
connection using pppconfig, by supplying it with new modem device.
Autodetection of modem device returned no results, so I typed modem port
manually: /dev/ttySL0 and saved settings for my dialup connection.
Unfortunately, when launching my connection, I get the following output in
terminal window where slmodemd was executed:

error: cannot setup hw params for playback: Invalid argument

Modem didn't show signs of life also.

Is it possible to test my modem to make sure it is properly configured
after slmodemd was launched? Anyway, I would like to express you my
appreciation for possibility to get support for Linux newbies - thank you
very much.
