Can you post your messages.

What does lspci return?

Maybe an IRQ, bios issue, acpi?

Can you try with a livecd, KNOPPIX, SLAX?

Here I am now running FC6

[olivares@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.20-1.2952.fc6 #1 SMP
Wed May 16 18:59:18 EDT 2007 i686 athlon i386
GNU/Linux
[olivares@localhost ~]$ uname -r
2.6.20-1.2952.fc6
[olivares@localhost ~]$ cat /etc/fedora-release
Fedora Core release 6 (Zod)
[olivares@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# service slmodemd status
slmodemd (pid 2413) is running...
[root@localhost ~]#
