Cool.

It should be then the motherboard, I guess. It is a Phitronics AM2N1K-M
what doesn't seem to be a model of stability. With kernel 2.6.18, it
worked good.

I compiled the same slmodem version and everything seems ok
at least until I try to load up slmodem giving the same error, cannot
load /dev/slamr0

I have Fedora 6 with that same kernel and it works fine. When that happens to me I go to the slmodem-2.9.11-20070505 or the latest one that is available from linmodems resource page directory and run the installation routine again and it works for me.
$ cd   slmodem-2.9.11-20070505
$ make clean
$ make KERNEL_DIR=/lib/modules/2.6.20-1.2948.fc6/build
$ make
$ su
password
# make install
# cd ungrab-winmodem-20070505/
# make clean
# make
# make install
# exit
$ su -
password
# lsmod
look for slamr and ungrab-winmodem if they are there run
# rmmod ungrab-winmodem
# rmmod slamr
then modprobe them again
# modprobe ungrab-winmodem
# modprobe slamr
# slmodemd -c BRAZIL /dev/slamr0

if this does not work, then please attach your error messages and what you did to fix it.

Regards,

Antonio

P.S. I have it working in FC6 and also FC7. In FC7 I have been knocked out in my connection by incoming calls and have not updated to latest fedora kernel-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 as I have 2.6.21-1.3226.fc7 which is working fine for me. In the case that you update to fedora 7 try to update to the latest kernel. The default one has several bugs that might/might not affect you. The default kenel is 2.6.21-1.3194.fc7. In Fedora 6, there was a newer kernel released and I have not updated on my machines.

[olivares@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.21-1.3226.fc7 #1 SMP Sat Jun 9 22:23:35 EDT 2007 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
[olivares@localhost ~]$ uname -r
2.6.21-1.3226.fc7
[olivares@localhost ~]$ cat /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 7 (Moonshine)
