The writer of the slmodemd code several of the companion drivers, Sasha K,
related to me that after exploring the possibility of writing a free
ware driver for the Conexant chips, he considered the problem too
difficult/time_consuming too undertake. Most of the soft modem chips
ashere to AC'97 codec standards. but the Conexant chips do not. So
unless you have deep COMM code skills, it would be quite formidable.

There is an Iranian Linux group interested in this problem as the
Conexant modems dominate the market in Iran.

This is one of the reasons why I wrote earlier that the work involved
might be much more than the fee to be paid to Linuxant.
I am usually pragmatic so I paid (then, 15$) for a license instead of
spending money on an alternate solution.

On the other hand, making this free driver work would be a challenge, an
interesting job by itself, and a service to the community.
And if nobody never tries it will really never work.
So, if you have free time, why not at least try it?
