Is THIS really EVERYTHING which you typed?
Again my ignorance of Ubuntu: usually slmodemd expects the user to define the COUNTRY where the modem is used.
Did you define it, or perhaps is it preset in file:
~slmodemd-2.9.11-20070505/scripts/debian/slmodemd ?
Furthermore, the install step should have placed slmodemd (the driver command used to start) elsewhere than just in your working directory.
Please reread the instructions about how to start slmodemd withh the
slamr module.
Again, I may be wrong as Ubuntu may install the driver differently from the other Linux distribution.

As to the error : 118: ==: unexpected operator, if I had to make a bet, I would say that it comes from mistyping the COUNTRY definition.
The correct spelling is sudo slmodemd -country=USA /dev/slamr0
or sudo slmodemd -c USA /dev/slamr0

Perhaps a second = has creeped in?

Jacques
(USA and Canada have the same phone systems, as you know, hence the
-c USA in your case).

Hello Firas,

Thanks for the pointers on getting the gcc build stuff loaded. I just popped
the Ubuntu CD into the CD drive and the package manager applet came up on
it's own. I found the appropriate package and was able to install with no
problems.

I downloaded the slmodemd-2.9.11-20070505 package and inflated it and was
able to run all the processes outlined in the README file, however I believe
I'm still having problems. While in directory
~slmodemd-2.9.11-20070505/scripts/debian I do: sudo ./slmodemd start and
get this error message:

Starting Smartlink Modem driver for slamr[: 118: ==: unexpected operator
failed exit: 118 illegal number: -1

I did some checking and I see device file /dev/slamr0 owner by root group
dialout major number 242 minor number 0 with permissions 660

Just for the heck of it I rebooted and the restricted driver manager came up
and sees the loaded drivers.

My thanks to both you and Jacques for getting me this far!!!!

Hope I've included enough information to proceed.

MANY Thanks
Jim

BROADCOM 4212]]

Hi

In Ubuntu (and also in Debian, by the way), all the packages required to
compiled stuff (gcc and all needed libraries) can be installed very
simply,
with the build-essential metapackage :

	$ sudo apt-get install build-essential

There is no need to get online to install it, the package is on the Ubuntu
CD.

FOLKS: I forgot to Cc: my message below to the list (Sorry for that,
Jim).
Jim needs very little help from an Ubuntu moderate expert at this time.
Marv is travelling.

Jim runs Ubuntu 7.04 kernel 2.6.20-15-generic.
He has a Broadcom 4212 modem.
Although it is generally admitted that this modem is not supported, the
information obtained under Windows indicates a Si 3035 chipset
(SmartLink riser) which is explicitly supported by the full, not ALSA,
slmodem package.

Jim's attempt to compile the driver strangely failed.
The C compiler (gcc) is installed but it does not find the basic
includes such as stdio etc...
I have no Ubuntu machine to help him.
On my CERN RedHat-based system, these files are found at /usr/include
installed by the glibc-headers rpm.

Can somebody instruct James how to make his compiler work?

Thanks in advance, dear friends

Jacques

JIM: please always Cc: to the list, so that people can follow up.
Have you tried to run the trivial program which I sent you? It's the
best way to find out if your compiler installation is sane.

Jacques,

Thanks for passing that on to a Ubuntu person ..... since you've been my
only contact I'm sending on some additional information.

I'm Ubuntu 7.04 kernel version 2.6.20-15-generic

Would you be able to share your Ubuntu person's email address so I can
just
take you out of the loop? I've heard nothing back and I'm dead in the
water
for others issue's that need to be resolved and can't be because I've no
dial up connection.

Thanks Jim

James

I am embarrassed.
I have ZERO experience of Ubuntu (using RedHat based distributions).
Clearly, the glibc headers are missing in your system.
Why, I have no idea.
THIS IS WHY I ASK ONE OF OUR UBUNTU READERS TO HELP YOU.

Jacques
