Dear member of our community of retired Linuxers,
I mean, dear Chris:
According to ModemData.txt you are the lucky owner of one of the very
few U.S.Robotics /3Com modems which need no special driver.
So I need to ask you to clarify what you mean when writing
"I tried wvdial.conf and it showed no modem installed."
Indeed, file wvdial.conf , hopefully /etc/wvdial.conf , is a data file
generated/modified by a command named wvdialconf (no dot in the middle).
May I therefore ask you to type the following command as shown:
sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdialconf 2>&1 | tee problem.txt
and send me BOTH files /etc/wvdial.conf and problem.txt thus created?
Please ERASE your ISP password in /etc/wvdial.conf if you have already
installed it in that file - to avoid making it public, of course.
In the command above, | stands for the colon-like symbol usually on top
of \ (backslash) which looks like a colon with short bars in place of dots.

I sure hope you folks can help out here, I'm still on dial-up and my new
Ubuntu Edgy install won't be worth much if I can't get this working.
I tried wvdial.conf and it showed no modem installed.
