should work for you. The intial speed will be a slow 14.4 mH for testing.
To enable the full 56 mH you have to pay www.linuxant.com for a software key

It is not clean whether

represents a successful setup of the USB modem. But just try:
$ sudo wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
The modem will be detected and tested if the setup is OK, and
/etc/wvdial.conf will be written

You can edit in your personal information between the < > symbols, using
$ sudo gedit  /etc/wvdial.conf
Do remove the < > symbols, and add a line
Carrier Check =  no
and save.

Then try a dialout  with
$ sudo wvdial

Hi Marvin,
Sorry for this long delay in between mails

A few queries
First the SGS Thomson Microelectonics is the finger print reader so this
is not a modem (silly but asking anyway)

Second the serial-to-usb modem is :
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial
Port

So are the instructions given for this

*or*
Are you saying that the winmodem aboard the laptop is compatible and i
have to download the packages in
