I found a slightly newer ISA card that fits the first slot of
ISA...wvdialconf detected this fine, I'm now up and running.

Thanks. I guess old ISA cards are ancient hardware.

No way we can help until you acquire some chipset info.

On the possibility that it is a Controller Chipset, check if the modem
is found by:
$ sudo wvdialconf  /etc/wvdial.conf
