We noticed that at-spi2-core itself is using a similar approach to run its CI tests, which also fails when run in a Fedora 38 GNOME session.

Colomban found this existing issue about running tests using dbus-broker on which I've commented now, hoping to get input from upstream:

at-spi2-core commit [1] now adds the possibility to explicitly select the DBus implementation to use for at-spi-bus-launcher by setting an environment variable, and pending Gerrit change [2] sets the environment variable accordingly to use dbus-daemon, which finally makes `make CppunitTest_vcl_gtk3_a11y` pass in my Fedora VM when at-spi2-core git main is in use.
