In the Session Manager settings, at the bottom you can see a text input area 
where you can type in the name (executable filenames) of the programs that 
you do NOT want to be saved in the sessions. So even if the app is open, as 
long as it is on the list, the app won't be saved in the session.

Of course, non-KDE apps do not follow KDE's session management, like Firefox, 
GIMP, GAIM, etc.
