I don't think this has anything to do with KDE, or Kmix, and may be more to do with the ordering of the soundcards when you bootup. It looks like your onboard card is being set as card0, and SBlive as card1. Will you post the output of: cat /proc/asound/cards and also: lsmod | grep snd If you don't want to use the onboard soundcard you can add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. (add it at the bottom of the file) install snd-emu10k1 /bin/true Change "snd-emu10k1" for the name of the snd module on your mobo. You can easily set the ordering of soundcards, but post back first, and we'll take it from there. On my Kubuntu my Audigy2 soundblaster (emu10k1) is set as card0, and my usb midi keyboard as card1. and I didn't have to make any changes to anything. On other distros I have to set indexing options to get the cards in the right order, otherwise the usb midi keyboard is set as card0, and obviously a midi keyboard is not a soundcard, and sounds don't work.
