I think the whole sendmail/sm-mta/smtp issue is a red herring. The problem is stated in your log entries from /var/log/messages:
cyrus/ctl_cyrusdb[161]: skiplist: clean shutdown file missing, updating recovery stampcyrus/ctl_cyrusdb[161]: recovering cyrus databasescyrus/ctl_cyrusdb[161]: done recovering cyrus databasescyrus/master[160]: cannot find executable for service 'http'cyrus/master[160]: exiting
Are you using Cyrus for Carddav/Caldav at all? If so, then you need to install the Cyrus httpd binary, which might be in a separate package (I am not familiar with the FreeBSD packaging for Cyrus 3.8.0. Was any change made to your Cyrus configuration file(s)? Check and see where they're expecting to find httpd. On my Ubuntu system it's in /usr/lib/cyrus/bin/httpd.
I hope this is helpful,

I have just turned Sendmail completely off, but Cyrus still has not recovered.
