This is the bit that I did not grasp. I did not understand what the instruction "For both methods, if 'mailfolder' is more than one level deep, you will need to conform to the hierarchy separator appropriate to your site" was telling me. Your example makes it clear what my error was. Perhaps providing a similar example in the FAQ would help to make this clearer to others as well.
