NFS is a file sharing protocol that doesn't provide full locking
semantics the way block devices do.

Has Cyrus been tested against NFSv4? My understanding is that NFSv4 "fixes" all the locking issues. The legends of NFS' insufficient locking continue, but I can only assume they refer to <=NFSv3.
