If we can figure out how to make this work comfortably for local and
remote folk, it really would be enormously helpful.

As a small matter it would mean that the chair does not have to keep
track of who is at which microphone so they are fairly servicing the
sequence.

More significantly, of course, it would mean that local and remote get
equal treatment.

But the added very significant benefit will be an accurate record of the
names of who spoke.  We currently rely on the speaker to say their name
and many/most folk mumble it incoherently.
