I suspect that for the most part they'd only be interested in an open standard if it could reliably push adverts as part of the content and generate reliably trackable page views from the adverts. It seems to me that the re-siloisation of data has been driven by commercial interests predicated on the hope of profit from reader/customer lock-in and advertising revenue.
