I am really grateful for Julian and co for doing this. But did we really have to force folk to jump through the hoops to recognize the obvious?

Oh, I think HTTP is really quite a good example of the process working well. RFC 2616 even says this:

"HTTP only presumes a reliable
  transport; any protocol that provides such guarantees can be used;
  the mapping of the HTTP/1.1 request and response structures onto the
  transport data units of the protocol in question is outside the scope
  of this specification."

That actually did happen, so even that 1999 document was right.

They did make a bunch of adjustments and clarifications in the meantime, so I don't think there was too much hoop-jumping. :)
