I think you are in effect arguing for a higher-order markup. or .. dare I say it mark-down? Because as a non-standard, its the lowest hanging fruit which can imply emphasis, structure and fixed-text as an embeddable notation. But, like HTML its a non-standard, for our purposes. The truly great thing about Markdown is that its almost always comprehensible in raw. -G
