When I was still a newbie at the IETF, I had the opportunity to co-author a few RFCs with Steve, and to get his help with a few others. “Kindest and most collaborative” is almost faint praise for what I experienced. He never officially was a mentor to me, but in retrospect I can say he was the most important one for my IETF work. Meticulous precision, true interest in moving forward, and openness to new ideas (if they turned out to be good). All the while being a person that you wanted to have as a friend.

He knew that I was interested in his EV1 electric car, and when he (after having to give that back and a long stretch without an electric car) finally brought a Tesla to an IETF, he offered me a demonstration ride. Well, the car rebooted in the middle of an overtaking maneuver on the freeway… He handled this with the same calm and focus that he handled difficult situations in IETF meetings.

Grüße, Carsten
