Dear Eve,

Thank you for sharing the very sad news and the very true tribute to Steve. He was one of the kindest and most collaborative technical leaders I've ever known and one of the most important of the Internet innovators. There's a very good account of his work, missing perhaps  what he did for AVT architecture, at

Condolences to Steve's family and friends, including the many of us at IETF. I am very saddened.

I am sad to have to share the news that Steve Casner, our long-time friend, colleague, and mentor, passed away this morning, July 4th, 2022. For those who had the privilege to work with him, you know firsthand that he was deeply knowledgeable about anything/everything with which he became involved, encyclopedic in fact, and a keeper of the history of the Internet’s journey toward packet audio/video. I can attest to the meticulousness and attention to detail that he possessed – unrivaled by anyone I have ever met - whether it was in bringing the Realtime Transport Protocol to life or in re-building historical electronics. Not surprisingly, despite his declining health, he was still posting to the Internet-history mailing list just last week. In addition to his wisdom, he was the consummate role model for humility, kindness, even-handedness, and quiet leadership. To echo the sentiments of many, it was a gift to have worked with him. He will be sorely missed.
