A "gun-free" zone guarantees that there won't be a mass shooting
there?  Because the potential mass shooter will see a sign that says
it's "gun free" and turn around and go home?

I'm just trying to understand your logic.  It seems that you may be
succumbing to "magical thinking".  You do realize that a "gun free"
zone involves nothing but putting up a sign.  Absolutely nothing
prevents anyone from bringing a gun into any hotel unless they
literally have a metal detector at every entrance.  Spoiler alert: no
hotels have that.
