Mostly I would agree with Joel. In this case its apples to oranges. We regularly reopen nominations of various slots because we haven't been able to find enough candidates and this is a similar case. In this case, the closure dates for volunteering are arbitrary, and extending will have an indeterminate (and more importantly a non-predictable) effect on the final selection of candidates.
In this case, we have 112 volunteers: perhaps the smallest number in 10-15 years. Asking for additional volunteers should not perturb the final selection process too much.
