It is really hard even for the insiders to come up with a reliable description of what is going on; we usually need something like a comment period with multiple pairs of eyes looking. draft-bormann-core-overview-01.txt is a related attempt (originally for an IEEE comsoc article), and getting it right requires continuous attention from chairs and key players.
