Doesn't STARTTLS take care of that? Doesn't TLS support compression, to
eliminate redundancy and resist cryptanalysis?

Not quite at present, but we're getting close:

The last call for proposed for this document went out yesterday.

I also note in passing that object level compression in MIME is the
