Another possible solution would be an option to allow only displaying the top N "most active" CPUs. Are you able to run top at all on this machine, or does it simply terminate on startup? In any case, it would be good to contact the top maintainers. I've CC'd Albert Cahalan, mentioned in my top manual as the person to send bug reports to. Albert, do you have a recommendation for how to use top on machines with more cpu's than top can display?
