So there could be a configuration option to do automatic detection of faked
(public) NATed Endpoints, do NO automatic detection (the situation now) and
add/remove a private address range to/from the standard private address
base.

I agree with you that this is technically sound, and it would greatly improve operation with many of the brain-damaged NATs out there. The big question is who will do the work ;)

Of course, it won't solve all the problems.  I have a user who has to reboot
his SMC router every few days, because its defective H.323 handling includes
a memory leak.

I think we are seeing some of the reasons why most ITSPs that deal with
consumers and small business are using SIP.  Of course, that's no prize,
either; it's just somewhat less awful.
