Re: Best linux dist for GnuGK?

Each system library has usually two versions, static (.a) and dynamic (.so).
While the latter are installed by default, the former need to be installed by hand.
If you want to compile applications, you usually install development tools and libraries.
Thos library RPMs usually end with "devel" suffix, like libstdc++-devel.
Usually, each such package also has a static version, with the suffix "static-devel"
(libstdc++-static-devel or libstdc++-devel-static, for example). You should install
those additional packages (at least static libc, libstdc++, openssl, openldap, expat
and more).

Mandrake 9.2 + AMD Duron
RedHat 7.3 + Dual Intel Pentium III 1133
SuSE 8.2 + Dual Xeon 2.8GHz
and similar (for compilation you need a special
machine with static versions of system libraries installed).

... and the winner is... UltraSPARCs running Solaris 8
- these are my favourite ones:)
