GTK+ applications do not by default allow ghosts to be left on
them. Blank areas, yes, but not ghosts. Applications on which ghosts
will be left include Mozilla and its derivatives, XChat and I think
also Evolution.

Missing the RENDER extension will make antialiasing very slow over a
remote connection, so yes, upgrading to an X server that has RENDER or
turning off antialiasing will most likely help.
