I would propose having a hard-edged, foreground color to background color gradient. Such a gradient can be useful for creating circles, boxes, blinds, bullseyes, and spirals. While it is fairly easy to create, this process is a little bit intimidating for new users and having the gradient available by default would make it easier to include its utility in tutorials.
