With very recent FreeType (IIRC 2.1.3 and later) the FreeType authors no longer recommend enabling the bytecode interpreter (even if the patent issues are a non-issue for you), because the improvements to the hinter actually make it do a better job than the patent-restricted bytecode interpreter. Not everyone will have a recent enough version, but it does mean that "Is the bytecode interpreter enabled?" question will eventually go away.
