Using degree 2 bernstein-bezier polynomials feels kind of right, assuming one could convince oneself that this problem is identical to smoothing three samples into a blending function, as if we were "plotting" a parabola by using three "control points" I'd implement the code with forward differencing or DeCastlejau's algorithm, though - which probably already lives elsewhere in the Gimp anyway.
