Go to gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla, log in if necesssary, go to "user preferences",
click the "email preferences" tab, and there are very many checkboxes to
finetune your bugzilla email experience. Pay special attention to the
"but not when the change was made by me" row near the bottom.

Funny, I must somehow have overlooked that "Preferences" link at top, after login.
Yes, it was exactly like you said:

but not when (overrides above):
The bug is in the UNCONFIRMED state
The change was made by me
"
The latter two were active --> have now deactivated them.
