I have Rawhide running in VirtualBox. For the last few weeks, at the
time X starts, the screen goes black, and I am unable to get a login
prompt, even in a VT. This forces me to do updates each day in rescue
mode, hoping the problem would go away eventually. I'm currently using
VB 3.0.0 but the problem started while using 2.2.4 (but the problem
started with some Rawhide update, not a VB one). Currently everything
appears normal in Rawhide right up to the time X starts, and I can do an
ACPI shutdown from VB, so the OS is responsive, even though the screen
is black. Any ideas what's wrong?
If I set the default runlevel in /etc/inittab to 3, then I can boot
Rawhide and end up with a normal text login prompt, and switch between
VTs at will. However, startx results in a permanent black screen again,
with no change even if I try to switch to a VT. The only indication of
responsiveness is that the ACPI shutdown initiated from VB works
normally. At least this way I don't have to use rescue mode to apply
updates.

I am not sure if it is relevant or not but I am having this exact same
problem with F11 on my Dell inspiron 2650 laptop. The last time it worked,
was during F11 devel. I have to boot it with pci=noacpi to get it to
work at all.

Tom
