Any ideas what's wrong? If I set the default runlevel in /etc/inittab to 3, then I can boot Rawhide and end up with a normal text login prompt, and switch between VTs at will. However, startx results in a permanent black screen again, with no change even if I try to switch to a VT. The only indication of responsiveness is that the ACPI shutdown initiated from VB works normally. At least this way I don't have to use rescue mode to apply updates.
