The gp-ep45-ud3p motherboard is at least six months old.
Ubuntu and OpenSUSE  install on this motherboard without
problems as well as Fedora 11 Release.

Possible silly question: any swap files (as opposed to swap partitions)?
When I commented out my swap file from /etc/fstab that problem went away for me.
