It's clumsy, though.

I've got it!  I was skimming the document while it was printing out, and have 
changed the line

masquerade_domains = $mydomain

to

masquerade_domains = |packbell.lydgate.lan

(which excepts that domain name from masquerade).  Running logwatch now 
produces a message that says

From: 
logwatch@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
