The message indicates that your network is "down". Since the other kernel works I would suspect the network driver for your wireless or wired interface. Does testing with the "other" interface -- wired or wireless -- produce the same result? NetworkManager applet should give visual clues about connection status, or from a terminal use 'nmcli' or 'ip'.
