So as to leave no stone un-turned, I installed XFCE from the most current Beta and did an update. I then installed T-Bird. I again had no trouble to display the sample messages you posted to the list.

I appreciate your effort. So it seems certain I have a unique problem, I
am at a loss to explain why. I've ordered another WD Black drive to
replace the failed drive and will do another installation on that in a
few days. I can't imagine what has caused the problem, I always do
things about the same way and stuff mostly works without a hitch ...
