Took me a while to get back to a nominally working system after the scaling experiment - had to go to backups in the end. Whatever gnome-tweak-tool tweaks in that case, it's not a simple reversable transformation. Anyway, here's an Emacs window being resized; it thinks it's 39x18, but, as can be seen, it's actually a little more than double that in both directions. Setting GDK_SCALE=1 makes Emacs behave rationally, thanks! jon
