I'm not sure I understand your problem but I did have some touchpad issues before and was able to get desired results from xinput. My problem was I couldn't turn the touchpad off because kwin wasn't picking up synaptic. xinput allows you to turn off or on just about anything detected by X.

I didn't understand when you said "switch"; at the time I was looking for a physical switch as opposed to a key on the keyboard. Looking at the direction-guide doesn't quite work so well when i'm sort of panicked, but now that I'm more relaxed I see that it describes this disable switch.Thanks!
