Taken me a while, but I've run lxde,xfce and gnome. paint and paste 
fails in all of them, in all apps, including the various terminals.

Messed with xinput, but nothing seemed odd, though this is way beyond my 
skill level,

I'd file a bug, but I have no clue under what heading.

I keep hoping there's some obvious setting I've messed up.
