I'm not a Squeak expert, but it's my understanding that the image is actually the preferred form for making modifications. See http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/1053 and http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Source_Code -- which raises the point that some of the code within the image is actually MIT and Apache 2.0 licensed. Exciting.
