You can use gst-launch and build a shell scriptable command to do the screen capture to a raw file.. then another gst-launch command to re-encode it to ogg... mimicing what istanbul wraps into UI gloss. For development/FC5, the gst08 cmdline tools will most likely be back into Extras in time for fc5 release, even if istanbul doesn't get rebuilt in time.
