I've seen weird brightness stuff with the latest drivers, but have not yet filed a bug. At least my brightness keys work again, so I can rectify that :) When the screen saver kicks in the backlight goes off, and does not come back on it's own. mplayer does weird things to the backlight, too, sometimes setting it to full brightness, sometimes switching it off.
